About Alvar Aalto
Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was Finland's most celebrated architect, known for a humanist Modernism that tempered industrial materials with natural forms, warm textures, and an attention to light and landscape. The catalogue holds 3 of his works across 3 cities in 3 countries.
The Stephanuskirche (1962) in Wolfsburg is a fan-shaped church where the ceiling rises toward the altar, drawing the congregation's attention forward through architectural form. Riola Parish Church (1978, completed posthumously) in Italy uses asymmetric concrete vaults to create a wave-like interior lit by hidden clerestories. The Muuratsalo Experimental House (1953) in Jyväskylä was Aalto's own summer retreat — a courtyard house where he tested brick patterns, tile combinations, and ceramic techniques in its walls.
