About Gerd Hänska

Gerd Hänska (1929–2012) was a Berlin architect whose work spans Modernist residential buildings, Brutalist research facilities, and one of the city's most iconic Futurist structures. All 5 of his buildings in the catalogue are in Berlin.

The Mäusebunker (1981), designed with Magdalena Hänska, is a stepped concrete laboratory building whose ventilation ducts and angular massing give it a fortress-like silhouette — it has become one of Berlin's most photographed Brutalist landmarks. The BESSY I synchrotron facility (1982) and the Ernst Ruska Building are further examples of his work for scientific institutions. His residential buildings on Kottbusser Straße and at Skalitzer Straße show a different register: Modernist housing for Berlin-Kreuzberg.
