About Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) worked in Germany before moving to the United States in 1938. He directed the Bauhaus from 1930 until its closure in 1933. His buildings offer a way to compare the use of structure, glass and open space across houses, exhibition spaces and museums.

The works in this collection span different stages of his career. Compare the enclosed rooms and masonry of the early houses with the glass hall of Neue Nationalgalerie, which opened in Berlin in 1968. The Barcelona Pavilion and Villa Tugendhat provide further examples of how walls, columns and materials can organise space.
