About Walter Gropius

Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919. The school brought art, craft and design into a shared programme, and its buildings offer examples of how these ideas were applied to workshops, teaching spaces and housing.

Start with the Fagus Factory in Alfeld, where the glazed facades allow a close look at the relationship between industrial production, daylight and exterior form. UNESCO identifies the factory as an early landmark in the development of modern architecture.
